Leader Positions
Interested in being a Math Orientation Leader? There are a wide variety of different positions available, each with their own unique role to play during the week. Each position offers a different experience, so apply for the one which best fits your personality.
Tie Guard
Tie Guard is a small, experienced group of leaders who work closely with FOC to organize Orientation Week. They are responsible for guarding the giant Pink Tie, planning the Summer Leader Retreat in June/July, and keeping track of all leaders during Orientation Week. They are on-site 24/7 during Orientation Week, guarding the Tie, and serving as the centre of information for all new students and leaders.

- All members of the Tie Guard team are directly responsible to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Specific Assets

- 1 year prior experience as an Orientation Leader (not required, but suggested)
- First-aid trained in accordance with Waterloo Orientation's specifications (all Tie Guard Leaders must be first-aid trained prior to Orientation Week)
- Responsibilities
-
- Working closely with the 2012 MathFOC to ensure Orientation Week runs smoothly
- Watching over the giant Pink Tie during Orientation Week
- Managing Math Orientation Headquarters
- Acting as a 24/7 centre of information for all Math leaders and new students

Being responsible for all Math Orientation Leaders, by:
- Managing radios and first-aid kits for teams during the Week
- Designing schedules for all Orientation Leaders
- Planning, organizing, and running the Summer Leader Retreat (a weekend day in June or July)
- Assisting FOC in planning/running the Winter Leader Retreat on March 11th
- Attending regular meetings as a team
- Sitting on the Orientation Planning Committee with Devisors and Teamsters (approx. 1 meeting every 2 months)
Devisors
The Devisors are a team of leaders in charge of planning (or devising) every aspect of the events during Math Orientation. They work both as a team and individually to brainstorm event ideas, write action plans and event guides, and make sure everything is in place for the events to execute smoothly. Different Devisor positions include: Waterloo Park Day, Earn Your Tie, Evening Mixer, Scavenger Hunt, and Technology (who works closely with the whole team).

- All members of the Devisor team are directly responsible to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Specific Assets

- 1 year prior experience as an Orientation Leader (not required, but suggested)
- First-aid trained in accordance with Waterloo Orientation's specifications (all Devisor Leaders must be first-aid trained prior to Orientation Week)
- Responsibilities
-
- Planning and organizing all Math events within the parameters set by the MathFOC. This will include designing a scoring system for the week.

Being responsible for one of the following areas:
- Waterloo Park Day: in charge of events at Waterloo Park. Is also in charge of overseeing the events occurring the same day
- Evening Mixer (to be renamed as planning progreses)
- Earn Your Tie: in charge of Earn Your Tie. Is also in charge of overseeing the events occurring the same day
- Scavenger Hunt: in charge of the Scavenger Hunt. Is also in charge of overseeing the events occurring the same day
- Technology: In charge of any and all tech needs during the week. Prior experience an asset, but not necessary
- Writing all necessary documentation for their area of responsibility (i.e. Orientation Action Plans and Event Guides), including follow-up documentation after Orientation Week
- Being present, available, and accessible during all Math events. In the event that a serious barrier develops, Devisors may be called upon to alter the plan accordingly
- Attending and assisting MathFOC with the Winter Leader Retreat on Sunday, March 11th
- Assisting Tie Guard in running the Summer Leader Retreat (a weekend day in June or July)
- Attending regular team meetings
- Sitting on the Orientation Planning Committee with Tie Guard and Teamsters (approx. 1 meeting every 2 months)
Teamsters
The Teamsters are the group which makes sure everything happens during the week. When not on a job, they work from the Tie Guard tent. When there’s a job to do, they are out driving the van and the truck, ensuring all supplies, materials, and water, arrive at every Math event. In this capacity, they need to work closely with the Tie Guard and the Devisors.
Teamsters must be 21 years of age with a valid G or G2 driver’s license.

- All members of the Teamster team are directly responsible to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Specific Assets

- First-aid trained in accordance with Waterloo Orientation's specifications (all Teamsters must be first-aid trained prior to Orientation Week)
- Responsibilities

- Being available from start to finish, every day of Orientation Week
- Working closely with Devisors and MathFOC to coordinate a smooth transfer of event materials to the necessary locations at the appropriate times
- Managing the delivery of water and power generators across-campus during Orientation Week
- Attending and assisting the MathFOC with the Winter Leader Retreat on Sunday, March 11th
- Assisting Tie Guard in running the Summer Leader Retreat (a weekend day in June or July)
- Sitting on the Orientation Planning Committee with Tie Guard and Devisors (approx. 1 meeting every 2 months)
Head Black-Ties
Head Black-Ties are responsible for managing the overall way in which the plan for an event is executed in real life. Working in pairs, they must manage their sub-teams of Black-Ties, deciding which leaders handle the many aspects of an event, and how the event will be carried out in a way which reflects the vision laid out in the event guide. They must also ensure that the Black-Ties are carrying out the events in a positive, fun manner for all.

- All Head Black-Ties are directly responsible to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Specific Assets

- 1 year prior experience as an Orientation Leader (not required, but suggested)
- First-aid trained in accordance with Waterloo Orientation's specifications (all Head Black-Tie Leaders must be first-aid trained prior to Orientation Week)
- Responsibilities

- Working as part of a pair to effectively accomplish all duties
- Properly managing their sub-team of leaders to smoothly execute all Math events
- Being familiar with the Event Guides (once finalized)
- Motivating leaders in their sub-team to submit all necessary fees on-time
- Attending both Leader Retreats (one in the Winter, the other in the Summer)
Head Pink-Ties
Head Pink-Ties are in charge of managing first-year teams, and the leaders on those teams. They must be familiar with the schedule for the day, and the general event plan, especially as it pertains to their team. They are the driving force which will keep their team enthusiastic and positive throughout the week.

- All Head Pink-Ties are directly responsible to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Specific Assets

- First-aid trained in accordance with Waterloo Orientation's specifications (all Head Pink-Tie Leaders must be first-aid trained prior to Orientation Week)
- Responsibilities

- Working in a pair with another Head Pink-Tie to effectively accomplish all duties
- Ensuring the leaders on their team are promoting a fun, safe, inclusive environment for all other participants in Orientation Week.
- Managing their team appropriately to ensure it stays on track with the schedule
- Being reachable during all Math events
- Being on-hand with a first-aid kit (in case of emergency) at all times during Math events.
- Motivating leaders on their team to hand in all necessary fees on-time
- Attending both Leader Retreats (one in the Winter, the other in the Summer)
Media
The 'Eyes of Orientation Week', Media is responsible for photographing and recording every aspect of Math Orientation. They put together the theme-release video (to be shown at Winter Leader Retreat in March), and they ensure all photos and videos are properly edited and uploaded once Orientation Week concludes.

- All Media members are directly responsible to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Specific Assets

- A previous knowledge of photography and/or video is recommended
- Responsibilities

- Putting together the theme release video in time for the Winter Leader Retreat on Sunday March 11th
- Making recommendations for media technologies to MathFOC in time for early rental
- Being present at all Math Orientation events, with a camera (photo or video)
- Photographing/filming the aforementioned events
- Sharing the photos/videos after the week (in space provided by the MathFOC), for both new students and leaders to see
Black-Ties
The 'Backbone of Orientation Week', Black-Ties are the leaders responsible for setting up, tearing down, and running all Math events. They interpret the event according to the direction of their head leader, they keep score, and they ensure the event is positive and inclusive for all involved.

- All Black-Ties are directly responsible to the Head Black-Ties for their specific team and to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Responsibilities

- Interacting with first-year students on an individual and group basis
- Assisting first-year students in their transition to the University of Waterloo by answering pertinent questions
- Working together as a team to ensure efficient setup and tear-down of all faculty events
- Facilitating all faculty events in such a way that promotes a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for all participants
- Attending the Summer Leader Retreat (a Saturday or Sunday in June or July)
- Attendance of the Winter Leader Retreat on Sunday March 11th is strongly encouraged
Pink-Ties
The 'Heart and soul of Orientation Week', the Pink-Ties are the leaders on the first-year teams. They interact directly with Math’s new students, and they will be the leaders who all the new students remember, once Orientation Week is over. On their teams, they work to keep spirit up, help think of team cheers, and ensure a good time is had by all.

- All Pink-Ties are directly responsible to the Head Pink-Ties for their specific team and to the members of the Federation Orientation Committee for the Faculty of Mathematics.
- Responsibilities

- Promoting a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for all participants of Orientation Week
- Interacting with first year students on an individual or group basis
- Assisting new students in their transition to life at the University of Waterloo by participating in the Orientation events alongside the new students, and by answering pertinent questions
- Attending the Summer Leader Retreat (a Saturday or Sunday in June or July)
- Attending the Winter Leader Retreat on Sunday March 11th is also strongly encouraged
Co-ordinators
We are also hiring for various co-ordinator positions. Co-ordinators are leaders in other positions who take on extra responsibilities on top of their main role in the week. If you are interested in a co-ordinator position, please apply directly to one of the other positions, you will have the opportunity to apply for a coordinator position as part of the interview process.
While more positions will become available as the year progresses, we will be looking for the following co-ordinators during this round of hiring:
- Artistic Co-ords
- Responsible for designing the themed Orientation logo, team logos, and any other artistic needs for Orientation Week.
- Website Co-ords
- Responsible for designing the 2012 Math Orientation Website.
- Handbook Co-ords
- Responsible for putting together, writing, and organizing the handbooks for new students.
More coordinator positions will become available after completion of initial hiring. Some require specific positions, so please keep this in mind. If this will strongly affect your position preferences, please let us know.
- Tech Coordinator
- Responsible for assisting the Technology Devisor with A/V setup and teardown. Must be a Black-Tie.
- Aerial Photo Coordinators
- Responsible for organizing the Aerial Photo which occurs during the Week.
- First-Year Kit Coordinators
- Responsible for organizing the kits which new students are given upon registration.
- Food Coordinators
- Responsible for managing food arrival/distribution/cleanup at Math events. Must be Head Black-Ties.
- Forum Moderator
- Responsible for moderating/administrating the forums on the Math leader website. Must be a planning-level leader.
- Leader Fun Coordinators
- Responsible for organizing fun incentives/rewards for Math Leaders during the Week. Must be Black-Ties.*May be initially hired as Pink-Ties.
- Software Engineering Coordinator
- Responsible for working with the Software Engineering Director on the Eng Orientation Committee, for the purpose of planning an effective Orientation Week for incoming Software students. Must be registered full-time in Software Engineering.
- Double Degree Coordinator
Cross-Campus Leader Team
New this year is a division of positions into Faculty Orientation Leaders and a Cross-Campus Event Team. Faculty Orientation Leaders will facilitate faculty-specific programming. The Cross-Campus Event Team will be responsible for running Cross-Campus events on Monday Night, Tuesday Night, Thursday Night, Friday Afternoon, Saturday Afternoon, and Saturday Night.
All Orientation volunteers will be involved in assisting with moving students into residence or helping acquaint students who live off-campus to the University.
